    Chrys J. Harris, Ph.D. will present: A Quick Review of the DSM-5. This 4-hour presentation will focus on the new diagnostic criteria, the ICD-9-CM nomenclature, and the ICD-10 nomenclature (now moved to October, 2015, by the US Senate). Basically the attendees will learn how to use the DSM-5 correctly and how to recognize what major changes the ICD-10 codes will provide psychiatrists, therapists, counselors, and other clinical people who will use it. This will be a 4-hour presentation on May 16, 2014, from 11:30am-3:30pm. Certificates will be given upon conclusion of the presentation. The cost will be .00.

    Denise K. Crockett, Ph.D. will present: Understanding Complex-PTSD. This 4-hour presentation will focus on how Complex-PTSD differs from the DSM PTSD, how to diagnose it, how to code it, and she will make some recommendations for treatment paradigms. Presently the therapists and counselors at the Family Therapy & Trauma Center are the only non-medical clinicians who are testing for, diagnosing, and treating Complex-PTSD. This will be a 4-hour presentation on May 30, 2014, from 11:00am-3:00pm. Certificates will be given upon conclusion of the presentation. The cost will be .00.

    Chrys J. Harris, Ph.D. will present: Understanding PTSD: Diagnostics and the Algorithmic Treatment Model. This 4-hour presentation will focus on how to stay with ICD-9-CM coding but use the DSM-IV-TR and the DSM-5 and how to follow a step-by-step treatment model developed over 30 years ago by Charles Figley, Ph.D.; now a professor at Tulane University.     Denise K. Crockett, Ph.D. will present: Understanding Transgender Clients. This 4-hour presentation will focus on a specific part of the LGBT population. This presentation will help the attendees learn about the issues and emotions that are bound up in a transgender client. This will be a 4-hour presentation on June 27, 2014, from 11:00am-3:00pm.     Chrys J. Harris, Ph.D. will present: Supervision of Supervision. This 5-hour presentation will focus on providing critical information to South Carolina Licensed Supervisors. The presentation will off one half of the ten hours required to renew the supervisors license. We will offer another 5-hour presentation in 2015.     Deborah Armstrong Hickey, Ph.D. will present: Trauma Focused Therapy | Developing Brain-Wise Treatment Approaches. This This 10 hour 2 day presentation will introduce participants to a foundational understanding of how trauma affects the brain generally; how the age at which one is exposed to trauma affects the potential outcomes; and how different contexts in which trauma occurs also affect the potential outcomes. Woven into the didactic presentation experimental exercises will be introduced that will give participants an embodied understanding of how brain-wise approaches can foster optimal treatment outcomes in therapy. This will be a 3-hour presentation on July 11, 2014, from 6:30pm-9:30pm & continue as a 7 hour presentation Saturday July 12, 2014, from 9:00am-4:00pm.     Deborah Armstrong Hickey, Ph.D. will present: Playful Approaches for Serious Problems | Integrating Expressive Arts and Play Therapies into Solution Focused and Narrative Models of Working in Treatment. This 10 hour 2 day presentation will introduce participants to the basic foundations of working using a postmodern approach, the basics of Solution Focused and Narrative positions in therapy, and several techniques that apply these approaches in a playful and expressive way making them ideal for working with families where there are children in sessions. Role plays will be used in the teaching of these techniques. This will be a 3-hour presentation on July 18, 2014, from 6:30pm-9:30pm & continue as a 7 hour presentation Saturday July 19, 2014, from 9:00am-4:00pm.     Ginger Culbertson, LISW will present: Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) #1.This 5 hour presentation will introduce participants to NLP and its tenets.. NLP is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California during the 1970s. They claim a connection between the neurological processes ("neuro"), language ("linguistic") and behavioral patterns learned through experience ("programming") and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life. Bandler and Grinder claim that the skills of exceptional people can be "modeled" using NLP methodology, then those skills can be acquired by anyone. The differences between NLP and hypnosis will be explained. Participants will learn how to use NLP to build client rapport and affect change. This workshop is approved for 5 Social Work hours.     August 8, 2014, from 10:00am-3:00pm

    Ginger Culbertson, LISW will present:Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) #2.This 5 hour presentation will take the participants further/deeper into NLP and is considered advanced. The two main therapeutic uses of NLP are: (1) as an adjunct by therapists practicing in other therapeutic disciplines; (2) as a specific therapy called Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy which is recognized by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy with accreditation governed at first by the Association for Neuro Linguistic Programming and more recently by its daughter organization the Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy and Counselling Association. Participants will learn how to gain unconscious feedback from clients and develop multiple change strategies. This workshop is approved for 5 Social Work hours. The cost will be .00.

    For maximum learning, you may wish to bring a copy of the DSM-5 with you. It will not be available for purchase at the meeting!


    This workshop will be conducted using slides and handouts developed by the editors of DSM-5 and made available only to OPPA trained psychiatrists.
